Amsterdam is

The Challenge

The next Citython will be held in the city of Amsterdam, The Netherlands, and is focused on mobility optimization. Our society is shifting towards a digital world, and for this new Citython edition, we want to create virtual tools and minimize physical solutions, which are usually expensive and hard to maintain. In a city where bikes are one of the main transport modes, we are also betting for sustainable solutions.

The three challenges for the Amsterdam Citython are:

  1. Green & efficient deliveries for a better neighbourhood - Devise a solution for a more efficient – and preferably emission-free – supply of goods and services in busy neighbourhoods in the city. The liveability of the neighbourhood should be considered as well as the consequences (financial or otherwise) for the customer of the goods or services.

  2. Park that bike right – Design a solution that improves bike parking, being the emphasis on influencing behaviour and/or on small technical or physical solutions; not using for bike parking facilities or other large and physical solutions.

  3. Journey simulator - Devise a journey simulator for the Amsterdam Area’s mobility network that focuses on (potential) accessibility issues encountered during journeys. The simulator needs to be kept up to date and passengers must be able to deliver feedback.

FAQs

What is a hackathon?

A hackathon is a sprint-like event in which small groups of young professionals search for innovative and creative solutions for everyday problems. The result can be a program, a prototype, a test model, a tool a design solution or a concept.

What is Citython Amsterdam?

An online 10-day hackathon that brings together creative and inquisitive minds to solve the current mobility challenges that people in Amsterdam are facing in the aftermath of the confinement stage. Young professionals from the fields of urbanism and computer and data sciences will be brought together for fun and an intense session of co-creation, hacking and collaboration. The difference to a typical hackathon is that Citython requires data analysis to understand a problem and reach a conclusion. Furthermore, this new edition will be held online in order to ensure all possible security measures following recent events.

What is a TechPill?

A TechPill is a short but definitive training/knowledge session on a certain topic (each will last around 30 minutes). The TechPills will offer you cutting-edge knowledge about Open Data, data analysis and visualization and gentrification so you can come up with the best ideas.

How does the online Citython work?

Due to the current crisis and the recent confinement stage, this new edition of Citython will be held online. After the registration process, the corresponding links to connect to the virtual platform will be sent to each participant. The welcome session, tech pills and the awards ceremony will be open to all the students, mentors and citizens. The same procedure applies to mentoring days, where each group will be able to attend individual mentoring sessions to receive feedback on their progress.

What are the requirements to participate?

You have to meet the following requirements: You must be at least 18 years old on the dates of the event. You have to apply as an individual on our website, but you can indicate in the registration with whom you would like to form a team. You must have a background in either data/computing or urbanism. If you have both, you are also welcome to join. Find out more about the specific skills required for each background on our website. For further information, read our rules and terms.

Will any help be provided to develop my project?

Sure! You will be able to attend our TechPills and receive feedback from the appointed mentors during the hack days.

AWARDS

There will be one winning team for each city challenge (three winning teams in total), and each of them will receive a financial award of 1.500 €. The winning teams will be chosen by a designated jury that will evaluate the solu􀆟ons based on special assessment criteria. One of the most important criteria will be that the winning teams propose solutions that are feasible and relevant for the city challenges, because these teams will be working with city representatives later on to implement the solutions. Another prize for the three winning teams will be to present their solutions at the Smart City Expo 2020 in Barcelona.

Who will judge the projects?

Representative of EIT Urban Mobility, Representative of Amsterdam city, Representative of Technical University of Catalonia, and Representative of CARNET.
